What are mycorrhizae?

Mycorrhizae are fungi that team up with plant roots. They grow out from the root into the soil, like an extension of it, and reach water and nutrients the root can't reach alone. In return, the plant shares some of the sugars it makes.

Most garden plants form this partnership, from vegetables and flowers to shrubs and trees. A few families are exceptions, such as the cabbage family (broccoli, kale, cabbage) and the heath family (blueberries, azaleas).

Questions

Granular or Soluble: which do I need?

Granular goes in at planting time, right next to the roots, and includes an organic 3-1-2 plant food. Soluble mixes with water for plants that are already growing, including pots and houseplants. Plenty of gardeners use Granular when they plant and Soluble after that.

When should I apply it?

As early in the plant's life as you can. Planting or transplanting is the best time. Soluble can go on any time of year.

Does it have to touch the roots?

Yes. Put Granular in the hole, close to the root ball. Pour Soluble at the base of the plant so it soaks down to the roots.

Can I use too much?

Using more than the label rate does no harm. The rates on the label are set so a little goes a long way.

Do I need to feed the microbes?

Organic matter helps. Compost, kelp, fish and humic products give soil life something to eat. Granular already includes organic plant food, and Soluble includes seaweed extract and humic acids.

How much is shipping?

Free on orders of $35 or more. Orders under $35 ship for a flat $9.99 within the US.
